February 6: In the season of Epiphany, we
stand and wait after Jesus' birth and baptism
and await his crucifixion, resurrection and
glorification. Jesus did all of this so that the
wind may blow. “For the wind blows wherever
it pleases,” Jesus once told Nicodemus (John
3:8). And the wind blows where Jesus is
forgiving sins. The wind blows where that
forgiveness comes as a free gift, not as
something we earn or work towards.

January 29: The devil either works by
convincing people that he is so powerful and
fearful that they must obey him as people do
in primitive societies when they try to
appease the demons, or he works by
convincing us that he doesn’t exist. That way
we look to medicine, psychology, and our
own grit and determination to fight that evil.
Then we become like someone caught in
quicksand. The harder we struggle to get out
of it, the worse we sink into it.

January 15: We can hear God as we “turn
down” the other voices around us. Samuel

where God told His people He was. He tells
us that we find Him today in His Word,
Baptism, Holy Communion, and in the
fellowship we have with other Christians. This
is where we can hear God.

clean slate at the beginning of a new
semester or a new year, we can’t. Our past
always seems to catch up with us.

January 1: We bind ourselves to being too
negative or focusing on other peoples’
problems. We bind ourselves by lying to stay
out of trouble or get what others have. We
bind ourselves by the excuses we use to not
help others. The result is that we are bound,
bound to sin. But Jesus is bound to nothing.

December 18: God doesn’t take the great
